Carlos Sainz Sr.



Before conquering the dunes of the Dakar, Carlos Sainz was known as "El Matador," dominating the forests, snow, and gravel of the World Rally Championship (WRC), where he established himself as a true global legend.  

  • His Debut: Sainz made his full WRC debut in the late 1980s and quickly became a top contender. He secured his first WRC victory in 1990 at the Acropolis Rally.

  • Historic Feats: His career was defined by immense consistency, technical prowess, and two hard-fought World Titles with Toyota. He was always a key figure for the teams he represented:

  • 1990: WRC Champion with Toyota.  

  • 1992: WRC Champion with Toyota.

  • WRC Record: He held the record for most WRC starts and most 

  • The Defining Moment: Though he had countless triumphs, his WRC career is also remembered for the dramatic loss of the 1998 title, where his car broke down just meters from the finish line of the final rally. This moment cemented his reputation for fierce determination.  

  • His Legacy: After retiring from full-time WRC competition, Sainz left a legacy as one of the most complete and influential drivers in the sport, paving the way for his later success in the Dakar Rally. And he manage to get 26 victories and 96 podiums

After reiring of WRC, Sainz started a new era in dakar with 42 years, and he follow makin history in the world of the motors racing in Dakar.

  • His Debout: He debuted in 2006 and get his first victory early in 2010 with Volkswagen in the first time a Dakar race was celebrated in south america

  • Historic feats: He alwais was important for any team that he take part in and he became champions with these teams

    1. 2010: Champion with Volkswagen.

    2. 2018: Champion with Peugeot.

    3. 2020: Champion with Mini.

    4. 2024: Champion with Audi.

His family: Sainz is married to Reyes Vázquez de Castro and is the father of three children, including the highly successful Formula 1 driver, Carlos Sainz Jr and Laia Sainz who has taken part in one of the Dakar races.
